Lynn Cove Barn and Garage
Asheville, North Carolina
Located along a creek in the mountains of Asheville, this contemporary barn reinterprets the familiar forms of the region's historic farm structures through a contemporary architectural language. Drawing inspiration from the simple forms, durable materials, and functional character of traditional Western North Carolina barns, the design creates a building that feels both rooted in place and distinctly contemporary.
The project is composed of a series of barn-like volumes clad in natural wood, with carefully detailed vertical screening that adds depth, texture, and visual rhythm to the façades. The warm wood exterior reflects the materiality of the area's historic farm buildings while introducing a refined and modern expression.
Given the site's proximity to the creek, resilience played a significant role in the design process. A continuous concrete half-wall forms the base of the structure, protecting the wood cladding from seasonal flooding and moisture while creating a durable transition between the building and the landscape. This simple yet effective strategy enhances the longevity of the structure without compromising its architectural character.
Large openings and covered work areas support the building's functional requirements while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding property. The result is a modern interpretation of the rural barn—one that respects the history of the region while embracing contemporary design, craftsmanship, and durability.
